Basketball players have lives off the court, too. For Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, he finds wine to be his go-to leisurely fix.
Head coach Ty Lue took the team during a recent off day to Napa Valley, which is right up the alley of James, who just got into wine a few years ago. And now, it’s a staple for the four-time MVP.
As teammate and fellow forward Kevin Love puts it (per Baxter Holmes of ESPN), when it comes to aged grapes, “Bron has a supercomputer in his brain.”
So while James makes a living reading defenses and creating offense for the Cavaliers, his recognition to wine is similar.
Per Cavs executive David Griffin, LeBron has essentially been programmed to have the light bulb turn on above his head when it comes to it.
“LeBron,” Griffin says, “has instant recall. If he’s driving on vacation and he passes a field that has lavender and seven other scents in it, LeBron can literally put his nose in a glass of wine three years later and say, ‘I smell lavender.'”
James has frequently touted Sprite in ads, but in the midst of his age-33 season, he’s not consuming a sugar-laden drink to keep his MVP-type numbers up.
A wine connoisseur, James can’t lay off of it mid-season, citing the health benefits it provides.
“I’ve heard it’s good for the heart. Listen, I’m playing the best basketball of my life, and I’m drinking some wine pretty much every day. Whatever it is, I’ll take it.
Whatever works, ‘Bron.
